Common worries

Will it damage my roof?

A good install seals every roof mount. Ask for a that covers leaks, in writing, for at least 10 years.

What if I sell my house?

A system you own usually goes with the house. A or has to be taken over by the buyer or bought out, so read that part of the contract.

What if my utility changes the rules?

Utilities can change rates and credits. Our numbers use today's rules and say so. Savings from using your own power hold up better than credits for power you send back.

What happens in a power outage without a battery?

Most panels shut off when the grid goes down, to keep line workers safe. To keep your lights on, you need a battery or special backup equipment.

What if the installer goes out of business?

The panel and makers' warranties still cover the parts, if those makers are still in business. You may have to pay another company for the labor. The ends with the installer, so pick an established company.

Selling power back to the grid

Some utilities use : power you send back is worth what you pay. Others use : power you send back is worth much less, so using your own solar, or storing it in a battery, matters more. Your numbers use your utility's rule.

Loan fees

Some low-rate solar loans add a to the price. Always ask for the cash price and compare.

Leases and the tax credit

Homeowners who buy can no longer claim the federal tax credit. Leasing companies still can, for systems running by the end of 2027, so a can come in lower. Ask how much of the credit you get.

Picking a size

Sizing to your whole bill makes sense with net metering. With net billing, extra power earns little unless you add a battery.
