Privacy policy
What contractors.fyi collects, why, who sees it, and how to have it deleted. Last updated October 4, 2026.
What we collect when you use the home project guide
When you ask the AI guide to help, we send your project description and follow-up to OpenRouter and the model provider it uses. Please leave out names, contact details and street addresses. We briefly store the guide's response to support reliable retries, and remove that response within two days. Your saved project, shortlist and edited brief stay in this browser until you clear them or clear the site's browser data. The guide does not contact businesses.
To research businesses, we send your confirmed city, state or region, country and type of work to our AI and web search providers. We keep the resulting public business and permit evidence so later homeowners can use it. We do not put your personal project description into those searches. We use a code made from your IP address and a secret to limit requests and account for provider costs; we do not store the IP address itself with these research requests. Cost records are kept without the guide response after that response expires.
What we collect when you ask for quotes
The kind of work, your ZIP code, what you want done, when you want to start, your rough budget if you pick one, your name, your email, and your phone number if you give it. We also keep the exact consent sentence you agreed to and the time you sent the request.
What we collect when you use the solar calculator
Your ZIP code, your electric bill and your answers about your home. If you check your roof, we send the street address you type to Google to find your roof in satellite photos. If you ask for your summary, we collect your email and send the summary through Resend, our email service. If you ask for quotes, we also collect your name, your street address if you give it, your phone number if you want a call or text, and how you want installers to reach you. With each request we keep the exact consent sentence you saw, the installers it named, the time you sent it, and the browser you used.
What we collect when you browse
We count page views and clicks on contractor links so we know which pages help people. We do not use cookies for this and we do not record your name or your IP address. Each visit is counted under a code made from your IP address, your browser and the date, scrambled with a secret, so we can count one visitor once a day but cannot follow you from one day to the next. We also note the country, region and city that Cloudflare, our host, reports for the connection, the kind of device, the site that sent you, and the ad campaign name if you came from one of our ads. We also use GoatCounter, a privacy-friendly page counter that does not use cookies. It receives your IP address to count visits, and on the solar pages only the page path, never the ZIP code or bill in the address bar.
To stop spam, we keep a scrambled code of your IP address with each quote request, for rate limiting only. The IP address itself is not stored.
What we collect when an AI assistant uses our tools
AI assistants can look up our data through our MCP server at contractors.fyi/mcp. For each lookup we keep the time, which tool was used, whether it answered, how long it took, and the name the assistant gives for itself. We do not keep what was asked: no city, ZIP code, business name or other detail from the question. The assistant's own company handles your conversation under its own privacy policy.
Who we share it with
We share a quote request only with up to 3 contractors who do the work you asked about, so they can contact you about that job, and only when you ask us to. For solar, when you send a request we share it with up to 3 licensed installers who work in your area, and we email you their names. Installers pay us a fee for each request we send them. We send your details to installers only at your direction. We don't sell or share them otherwise, and never for advertising. Our host, Cloudflare, stores the site and its data for us, and its Turnstile check stops spam on our forms.
Information about contractors
Contractor names, license numbers, phone numbers, business cities and job records come from public records: city building permits and state or city license lists. We show them so homeowners can see who has done the work. A business that finds an error can email us.
How long we keep it
We keep a quote request for as long as we need it to connect you with contractors, and no longer than a year. We keep the record that you agreed (the consent sentence, the time, your phone number and the installers named) for 5 years, to show you asked to be contacted. Visit counts are kept as totals.
Your choices and rights
You can ask to see, correct or delete the details you sent us. Emailsupport@contractors.fyi and we will answer within 30 days. Contractors who already have your request keep their own copy, so ask them too. If you live in California or another state with a privacy law, these rights apply to you. We send your details to contractors only at your direction, and only to the up to 3 we send your request to. We don't sell or share them otherwise, and never for ads. Our site does not respond to browser Do Not Track signals, and we do not follow you across other sites.
Children
This site is for adults hiring contractors. We do not knowingly collect details from anyone under 16.
